Why were these courses changed and how are the new versions different from the original courses?

These courses were changed to improve both the content presented and the student’s learning experience. The new courses are more interactive, easier to use and view, have audio narration and are broken into smaller, more manageable chapters and modules, allowing students to study content in small chunks. Content has also been updated in every department to reflect current trends and industry standards, especially in areas such as Electrical & Lighting and Plumbing.

What do I do if I have staff midway through a previous Basic Training Course?

Just keep studying and testing! If a student is in the middle of the course when the new course is launched, we encourage them to move over to the new system and use the new course material found on www.nrhatraining.com to pick up wherever they left off. All of the Basic Training tests in the NRHA Training Testing Portal have been updated to reflect the new course material. It is also important to note that the new Basic Training Course in Hardware Retailing only has 8 departments and tests, unlike the old version of the course, which had 11 departments and tests. Moving forward, students will only need to complete 8 courses to receive a certificate of completion from the North American Retail Hardware Association.

How do I transfer my staff to the new course?

If you are a trainer or student who has already been using NRHA’s Basic Training Course in Hardware Retailing, the only thing you will need to do is encourage your students to use the new and updated course modules on www.nrhatraining.com to prepare for the tests. You will not need to make any changes to your store’s database or student/trainer testing information, login or passwords. All of the processes of testing and testing management will remain the same.

What if my store does not take the course online, but uses the study guides to prepare and then takes the test on paper for our trainer to enter online?

You can continue taking the courses this way. Just go to the new website, www.nrhatraining.com to download the revised study guides. Also make sure your trainer prints off new versions of the tests for you to fill out. All tests have been revised to accommodate the new content.

As a store owner/manager new to NRHA’s online training programs, how do I get started?

Once you have decided to get your employees involved in NRHA’s training programs, you’ll need to register your store and your students in the NRHA Training Testing Portal. This will give your students access to the tests associated with the Basic Training product knowledge information on this website. It will also allow you to monitor your students’ testing activity. Here’s how to get started:

Step 1: Register Your Store

First, you need to Register Your Store in our training database. At the bottom of the store registration, you will set up a username and password so you can access the Training Manager’s area of the site where you will register students and keep track of their progress. To register your store, click http://www.nrhabasictraining.com/register.aspx

Step 2: Login to the Training Manager’s Information Section

Follow these steps to login to the Training Manager’s Information section of the site:

Click the “Download the Study Guide or Take the Test” button at the upper right hand corner of the screen. Click the “Trainer Login” link. This will take you to a login screen. Click the “I Am a Trainer” login button, then enter the username and password you created when you registered your store. This will give you access to the area of the site where you will enroll your students for the course. If you forget your user name and password, you will have to call NRHA at 800-772-4424 to obtain a new one. To login, click http://www.nrhabasictraining.com/login.aspx

Step 3: Register Students

For new student registrations, click the blue “New Student” button in the red bar at the top of the Training Manager’s Information section. You will enter the student’s first and last name, along with a user name and a password that you create for each student.

Step 4: Provide Student with Temporary Login to Take Test

The login you create for students when you register them is for their initial access to the site. When the student logs into the site for the first time, they will change their password for security purposes. If a student ever forgets his or her password, you will be able to reset their passwords for them from the Training Manager’s Information section.

I’m a new student user of NRHA’s Basic Training Course in Hardware Retailing. My manager set me up to take tests, but now what do I do?

After you have viewed and studied the material for a particular department and you are ready to take a test, follow these steps:

Step 1: Get Student Registration Information from Training Manager

To access the tests, you will first have to login to the student testing page using the username and temporary password provided by the store’s training manager. If you don’t have your username and temporary password, ask your training manager to provide this information.

Step 2: Login as Student to Take the Test

Go to http://www.nrhabasictraining.com/Login.aspx

Click the “I Am a Student” login button, then enter the username and password provided by your Training Manager. For security purposes, you will then be asked to create your own password when you first log into the site. You will need to remember this login information to take subsequent tests. If you forget your user name and password, your training manager can give you a new one.

Step 3: Access the NRHA Course from Drop-Down Menu

Once logged in you will have access to the Student Testing Page, which has a listing of all the courses and the different tests that are available. At the top of the page you will see a “Change Course” drop-down list. Select the course from the drop-down list to access the appropriate test.

Step 4: Take the Test

When taking a test, select the best answer for each question. When fished taking the test, hit the “Submit” button. Your test will be automatically graded and you will get to see which questions you got right and which ones you missed (along with the correct answers). A score of 70 percent or higher is considered passing. If you don’t score 70 percent or higher, you will need to check with your Training Manager about taking the test again.
